The Flattest Leaderboard in the Business

On most record boards, whoever sits at #1 pulls some real daylight between themselves and #2. Not here. Every app we can name in the top ten, from Parchi: Audio Sticky Notes down through Assemblr Studio : Viewer, lists the exact same minimum requirement: iOS 1.0. The distance between #1 and #2 is nothing. The distance between #1 and #100 is nothing too.

That's not a fluke, it's a ceiling. Apple shipped iOS 1.0 as its very first release, years before the App Store existed in any shape we'd recognize now, so there's simply no lower number left for anyone to grab. Nobody separates from the pack on this metric alone. Everyone here is standing on the same floor, which means whatever is actually driving the ranking has to be coming from somewhere else entirely.

The Crown That Won't Sit Still

Aurora Player isn't among the names listed above, but it's the reason this board has any story worth telling right now. It showed up new to the top ten and grabbed #1 outright, held that spot for 20 of the last 42 tracked days, then handed it off to Parchi: Audio Sticky Notes in September 2026. Over the whole period we've tracked, the crown has changed hands 10 times, which is a startling amount of churn for a number that can't possibly go any lower than 1.0.

So why does the top spot keep shifting if nobody can beat the number underneath it? Ties at the floor get resolved by something other than the number itself, most likely by when each value was confirmed or when the app first entered the pool. The metric never moves. Whoever gets to sit on top of it, though, clearly still can.

One Repeat, One Outlier

Veep LLC shows up four times in the top 100. For a single developer, that's a real footprint on a board where almost every other name appears just once, and it points less to coincidence and more to one codebase getting forked and republished again and again, rather than four unrelated apps happening to land on the same ancient floor.

The real outlier is CWRUXR, built by Case Western Reserve University, parked at #4 among a run of otherwise commercial products: a sticky notes app, a calculator, a live cricket scores app, an art projector. Finding a university-built AR viewer in that lineup tells you something about this board: it rewards neglect just as readily as intent. Nobody in a university IT office is losing sleep over keeping a research tool compatible with iOS 1.0. It just never got touched again.

What the Floor Actually Proves

Sitting at iOS 1.0 doesn't mean an app runs well on ancient hardware, or even that it runs at all. It just means nobody ever bothered to nudge the metadata upward. Read it charitably and you'd call it genuine backward compatibility. Read it cynically and you'd call it an app nobody has opened or updated in a very long time. Right now, both readings are probably true at once, and the board itself has no way of telling you which one you're actually looking at.
