An Operating System Beats the Games

Here's the strange thing about this list: the top entry isn't a game or a streaming app. It's a full desktop operating system. macOS Big Sur, at 11.7 GB, sits at #1, and whoever's in second place isn't close: OS X El Capitan trails at 5.8 GB, meaning the leader is nearly double the size of the next entry. Calling this a 'free app' feels like a stretch, honestly, since Apple's just giving away an entire computer's worth of software with no price tag, on a chart that's supposed to be tracking apps.

Once you get past that, the rest of the top six makes more sense. It's basically an Apple retrospective: Sierra at 4.7 GB, Catalina at 4.6 GB, and High Sierra at 4.5 GB, with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2025 tying High Sierra at 4.5 GB as the first actual application to break into the leaderboard. Real games don't show up until #7 and #8, where 我的世界：移动版 (Minecraft's mobile edition in China) and 恋与制作人 both land at 3.9 GB, with Where Winds Meet and 轩辕传奇手游 trailing at 3.7 GB apiece.

The Crown Just Changed, and Fast

Until recently, 我的世界：移动版 was sitting at #1, which was already a quick turnaround for something that had only just cracked the top ten. It didn't last: the game held the top spot for just 1 of the last 15 tracked days before macOS Big Sur pushed it aside in July 2026. That marks the sixth change at the top across the tracked period, which is a surprising amount of churn for a board of this size.

The volatility isn't limited to #1, either. Entries in the top ten move an average of 3 places over the tracked window, which is quick for a ranking based on file size. Files don't shrink on their own, so that movement is really coming from new arrivals and updated builds bumping older versions down, rather than any app actually losing weight.

Where the List Actually Lives

Despite all the drama near the top, most of the top 100 is much more ordinary. The list stretches from 11.7 GB all the way down to just 3.3 GB at #100, and the median entry is roughly a third the size of the leader: the #1 spot runs 3.3 times the median. Once you get past the handful of system images and a few sprawling open world mobile games, the list flattens out into a long stretch of apps bunched up near that 3.3 to 4 GB floor.

One developer stands out in that stretch. Shenzhen Tencent Tianyou Technology Ltd appears 14 times in the top 100, more than any other developer manages anywhere near the top of the board. Underneath the headline story about Apple's OS images and a couple of enormous Chinese mobile games, there's a quieter cluster of large, unremarkable apps doing most of the actual work of filling out the list.
