The Launch Day Effect

Does the day of the week an app is born or updated quietly shape its fate on the App Store?

Original research by AppWanderer, computed from a sample of 1,035,754 public App Store listings drawn from our index — every figure here is calculated, never estimated. See our editorial standards and glossary.

Summary

Wednesday wins the launch-day race outright: 195,974 apps went live that day, which is 18.9% of the 1,035,754 apps in this study. Stack Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday together and you've got a clear majority of all launches happening in the middle of the week. Updates follow nearly the same script, with Tuesday out front at 193,388 updates (18.7%). Weekends tell a different story: Saturday and Sunday combined pull in just 15.05% of launches, versus 84.95% spread across weekdays, meaning weekend activity sits at only 17.7% of what you see on a typical weekday.

Here's the strange part: average rating hardly budges depending on the day, holding steady between 4.1 and 4.2 regardless of when an app drops. Rating volume is a different animal, swinging from 3,409.8 on Thursday down to just 2,229.8 on Friday. So the day you launch doesn't seem to change how well people rate your app, but it does seem to change how many of them bother to leave a rating in the first place. That's a strange gap, especially given how packed those midweek launch days already are.

Wednesday wins the launch race, but the whole middle of the week is crowded

Wednesday leads with 195,974 launches (18.9%), though Tuesday isn't far off at 192,468 (18.6%) and Thursday lands at 190,321 (18.4%). That narrow spread between the three days suggests teams are leaning toward midweek generally, not Wednesday specifically. Monday slips to 154,236 (14.9%), and Friday dips even further to 146,835 (14.2%). Makes sense when you think about it: teams want a day after the weekend to finish prep, and they want a cushion before the weekend so the launch isn't shipping into silence. Weekends barely register. Sunday pulls in 80,776 (7.8%) and Saturday 75,144 (7.3%), roughly a third of what any midweek day sees. Press outlets, app store editors, and reviewers all run on business-week clocks, so anything launched over the weekend just sits there until Monday. If you're planning a launch, there's a real tradeoff to weigh: Wednesday doesn't actually buy you an edge, and choosing it means going head to head with nearly 196,000 other apps launching at the same time. That crowding might be exactly why rating volume doesn't track with the busiest launch days.

Update timing mirrors launch timing, except on weekends where the order flips

Updates still bunch up midweek: Tuesday (193,388, 18.7%), Wednesday (190,730, 18.4%), and Thursday (186,309, 18%) cluster together much like launches did. Monday updates (162,102, 15.7%) top Friday updates (151,712, 14.6%) by a bigger gap than we saw with launches, and that tracks: teams would rather push fixes early in the week than risk a broken build right as the weekend starts. Things flip on the weekend, though. Saturday updates (84,276, 8.1%) beat Sunday updates (67,237, 6.5%), which is the opposite of the launch pattern, where Sunday (80,776) edges past Saturday (75,144). That reversal makes sense once you think about why each happens. A Saturday update is usually a developer scrambling to patch something before Monday traffic hits, not a planned release. Sunday launches, on the other hand, feel like a quieter, more deliberate move, something a smaller set of teams choose to do on purpose. So if you're reading update cadence as a signal of team health, Tuesday through Thursday is the normal rhythm, and a pile of Sunday activity is the thing that should actually catch your eye.

Day of launch does not buy you a better rating, full stop

Ratings barely budge over the course of a week. Monday through Thursday land at 4.2 on average, while Friday through Sunday come in at 4.1. That's a one tenth of a point spread across all seven days, which is noise, not signal. It also knocks down a theory that sounds reasonable at first glance: that apps launched on quieter weekend days get rated more generously since there's less competition for attention. The numbers don't back that up. Average rating simply doesn't care what day you hit submit. So if you're eyeing a launch day thinking it'll nudge your quality signal, drop that plan, there's nothing here worth chasing. Whatever ends up driving an app's success or failure, the calendar isn't part of it, or at least not in any way that shows up in the rating itself.

Thursday launches pull in far more ratings than Friday launches, and that gap is the real finding

Launches that go out on Thursday pull in 3,409.8 ratings on average, better than any other day on the calendar. Friday brings up the rear at 2,229.8. That's a gap of over a thousand ratings per app between two days sitting right next to each other on the week. Wednesday (3,116.0) and Tuesday (3,034.1) also hold up well, which fits the general pattern of midweek launches grabbing more attention. But Thursday edging out both of them is worth a second look, especially since it has fewer total launches than Wednesday to begin with: 190,321 versus 195,974. Saturday (2,844.3) still beats Monday (2,778.5), Sunday (2,350.2), and Friday (2,229.8), so weekends clearly aren't a dead zone. Friday is the real problem day. One possible reason is a visibility window: an app that launches on Thursday rides a full weekend of organic use and word of mouth before everyone's attention resets at the start of the next work week. Launch on Friday, though, and you get buried almost right away as discovery traffic falls off over the weekend. If you care more about long-term reach than a flashy launch day, Thursday is the day to pick, and Friday is the one to avoid.

Language support does not shift with the calendar, which rules out one explanation for the reach gap

Language count barely moves across the week: 3.7 on Saturday, Friday, Thursday and Wednesday, and 3.6 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. That near-flat line kills off one obvious theory before it even gets going. Thursday apps average 3,409.8 ratings, while Friday apps average 2,229.8, and you can't chalk that gap up to Thursday apps simply offering more languages or chasing more markets. Localization hardly shifts from one launch day to the next, so it can't be what's driving the difference in rating volume. Whatever is actually behind Thursday's edge lives in timing and attention cycles, not in how broad the product is. If you're trying to pin down what really gives Thursday its advantage, this comparison earns its keep simply by taking a wrong answer off the table.

Weekend launches are a minority choice, and a deliberate one

Weekends account for just 15.05% of launches, with the remaining 84.95% happening on weekdays. So weekend activity sits at only 17.7% of the weekday total, under a fifth of it. Given that weekends cover two of seven days (28.6% of the calendar), a 15.05% share tells you launching on a Saturday or Sunday is the exception, not the default. And there's no real cost to going against the grain: weekend ratings average 4.1, just a touch under the weekday average of 4.2, while Saturday launches actually outperform both Monday and Sunday on reach, averaging a rating volume of 2,844.3. The small group launching on weekends isn't losing anything by doing so. If anything, weekends seem underused relative to what they deliver, and the pileup of launches from Tuesday through Thursday might be thinning out attention rather than building it up.

The bottom line

Topping the launch-day popularity contest doesn't actually translate into ratings. Thursday beats Wednesday on average rating volume (3,409.8 versus 3,116.0) even with fewer total launches, while Friday, the fourth most popular day for launches, somehow posts the worst rating volume of the week (2,229.8). Ratings themselves hardly budge by day, staying in a tight 4.1 to 4.2 band across the board, so reach is really the only thing worth optimizing for. On that basis, Thursday earns its spot and Friday squanders its own.

Method & limitations

How this was made: this study is computed across 1,035,754 apps carrying the public App Store metadata it needs, drawn from our live index of 1,063,379 tracked apps, and is recomputed on a schedule. It is a large, representative sample of the store rather than every app in existence, and the figures shift over time as the store changes.

  • Public metadata only. These figures come from what apps publicly list in the App Store. Downloads, revenue, retention and in-app subscription pricing are not visible to us — we name them, and we never estimate them.
  • A large sample, not a census. The study runs across a representative slice of the store rather than every app in existence, so figures move as the store and our index change.
  • Recomputed, not frozen. Numbers are recalculated on a schedule; a figure quoted elsewhere may differ from the one shown here after the next rebuild.
  • No estimates or third-party numbers are used.

Common questions

What day do most apps launch on?

Wednesday, with 195,974 launches, 18.9% of the 1,035,754 apps in this study. Tuesday (192,468, 18.6%) and Thursday (190,321, 18.4%) are close behind, so really it's a midweek pattern, not a single-day one.

Does launching on a weekend hurt your app's rating?

No. Weekend launch ratings sit at 4.1 average, only a tenth of a point below the 4.2 seen on Monday through Thursday. That's not a meaningful gap.

Which launch day gets the most ratings?

Thursday, with an average rating volume of 3,409.8, the highest of any day. Friday is the worst at 2,229.8, which is striking given Friday is still the fourth most common launch day (146,835 launches, 14.2%).

Are updates shipped on the same days as launches?

Mostly yes, Tuesday through Thursday dominate both (updates: 193,388, 190,730, 186,309). The one flip is on weekends: Saturday updates (84,276, 8.1%) outpace Sunday updates (67,237, 6.5%), while for launches Sunday (80,776, 7.8%) actually edges out Saturday (75,144, 7.3%).
